Dr. Maureen Coady - Assistant Professor
Dr. Coady received a Bachelor of Secretarial Arts (BSA) in 1976 and a Master of Adult Education (MAdEd) from Saint Francis Xavier University in 1992. Her MAdEd research focused on strategies for supporting and retaining women’s participation in part-time distance education programs (i.e. STFX’s Post RN BScN program). In 2007, she completed a PhD in Adult Education Research at the University of Nottingham in the UK, focused on community engagement in health planning and health volunteerism. She is interested in the links between health and learning, and the role adult education can play in enabling citizens to learn their way towards better health. |

Dr. Leona English - Professor
Dr. English holds a BA and BEd from Memorial University, an MRE from University of Toronto, an EdD
from Columbia University, NYC, and a PhD from University of Technology, Sydney, Australia. She is past president of the Canadian Association for the Study of Adult Education and editor of the International Encyclopedia of Adult Education(Palgrave).
Her research interests include a qualitative study of Gender and Learning in Women's Nonprofit Organizations (national SSHRC funded study) and an archival investigation of adult education (regionally funded study). |

Dr. Behrang Foroughi - Assisstant Professor
Behrang joined us in September, 2008. His work is divided between our department and the Coady International Institute. He has worked with several community development projects in rural/urban Iran, rural India and urban Canada. His research and professional experience include community-based research, participatory program planning, monitoring and evaluation, participatory budgeting and citizenship learning within such participatory practices of democracy. He has BSc in Engineering (Isfahan University of Technology, Iran), MSc in Planning (University of Guelph) and PhD in Adult Education and Community Development (University of Toronto). |

Dr. Kathleen Kevany - Assistant Professor
Kathleen enjoyed studying cross cultural relations and social-psychology (BA, Carleton University). But a whole new world of teaching and learning opened up through the collaborative and self-directed studies in Adult Education. For her Masters she studied counseling, human relations, and international development (M.Ed., OISE-University of Toronto). Her doctoral studies focused on transformative adult learning and social change (EdD, OISE-University of Toronto). She has been a Lecturer with Brock University, The University of Western Ontario, and Hiroshima School of Graduate Studies and International Cooperation. Kathleen joined StFX’s Faculty in July, 2010.
Kathleen had the honor of a post-doctoral fellowship with the United Nations University in Japan. At the Institute of Advanced Studies she managed the portfolio on Education for Sustainable Development. She relishes the experiences and insights she has gained from working across three decades in the not-for-profit sector, owning and managing a business, and teaching and leading in the broader public and government sector. Her work has been focused on enhancing individual and community well-being and citizen engagement. Some of her research projects focus on mindfulness and transformation, including the spiritual dimensions of human experience at work, home, or play. Additionally, Kathleen is active in learning through experience, communal action, and reflection. Both in her work and studies she has considered the various elements of multi-sectoral collaboration and involves herself in deliberative democracy and citizen engagement studies and work. She also is contributing to an international collaboration on Women, Water, Waste, Wisdom, and Wealth.

Dr. Elizabeth Lange – Assistant Professor
Dr. Lange is the newest faculty member as of January 2010. Elizabeth holds a PhD in International/Intercultural Education – Adult Education from the University of Alberta (Edmonton) specializing in transformative learning, sustainability education, action research, and pedagogies for social change. Her MEd (University of Alberta) was in International and Comparative Education focusing on Freirean philosophy/pedagogy and the role of community adult education in social transformation in Southern nations.
Her BEd (University of Alberta, With Distinction) was for Secondary Social Studies upon which she taught high school and served in the Department of Alberta Education for a combined 15 years. Her prior academic appointment was Assistant Professor of Adult Education, University of Alberta. Most recent research studies include: Learning Assessment of Low-Income Adults in the City of Edmonton; Learning the Language, Learning the Land: Language and Environmental Literacy; State of the Field of Environmental Adult Education in Canada; and the SSRHC-funded Knowledge Creation Practices of Older Professionals in Changing Work Environments. She won the top graduate research award in North America from the Adult Education Research Conference (AERC) for her research on the professional development of K-12 teachers in global education. |

Dr. Carole Roy - Assistant Professor, Department Chair
Dr. Roy studied Women's Studies/Liberal Studies (BA, University of Victoria), Women's Studies (MA, York University), and Adult Education (PhD, University of Toronto). While on a Postdoctoral Fellowship from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) she taught at Trent University, Peterborough.
She worked as a non-formal educator with community-based educational exchanges (Tunisia, Thailand, Uruguay, various parts of India). Her interests include women/older women activists; the use of arts for social change; qualitative and arts-informed research. Her book, The Raging Grannies: Wild Hats, Cheeky Songs, and Witty Actions for a Better World (2004), was published by Black Rose Books and was selected for the 2005 Amelia Bloomer Award (Feminist Task Force of the American Library Association). She is working on a film on the Raging Grannies and is currently doing research on documentary film festivals as tools for adult education and community building, and greatly appreciates the support of a research grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.

Allan Quigley

Dr. Allan Quigley - Professor
Dr. Allan Quigley completed a Bachelor's and a Master's degree in Arts (English) at the University of Regina, Saskatchewan (1967 & 1975). He has an EdD from Northern Illinois University (1987). Prior to coming to StFX in 1997, he was at Penn State University, Pennsylvania. Before that, he was with the Department of Continuing Education in Saskatchewan—first as Coordinator of Community Colleges and GED Administrator, then as Director of University Affairs Branch. During the 1970s, Allan was one of the founders of Regina Plains Community College; was an adult education teacher and administrator at Keyano College, Alberta before that; taught adult literacy in Northern Saskatchewan in 1972; and was a volunteer ESL teacher with CUSO in India from 1967 to 1970.
His research interests are in adult literacy, social policy, and distance education. He is past Editor of The Canadian Journal for the Study of Adult Education and The Antigonish Review. He serves on various professional boards both in the U.S. and Canada. |

Jane Dawson

Dr. Jane Dawson
Dr. Dawson completed a Bachelor's degree in Classical Studies at the University of British Columbia (1981). Her MA (1989) and PhD (1996) in Adult Education were also completed at the University of British Columbia. Prior to coming to StFX in July 2000, she taught for four years in the Graduate Programs division of the Faculty of Education at Simon Fraser University.
Her research interests are in workplace education, qualitative research, the social and political context of adult education, and the relationship between theory and practice. She belongs to several scholarly associations in adult and higher education and was an associate editor of The Canadian Journal for Studies in Adult

Dorothy Lander

Dr. Dorothy Lander
Dr. Lander completed her Bachelor's degree in English and Fine Arts at Queen's University (1969). Dorothy has a M.Ad.Ed.(1981) from St. Francis Xavier University. Her PhD research degree in Adult Education from the University of Nottingham (1997) explored the university as a service organization. Before her doctoral work, Dorothy worked at StFX as manager of student residences, cleaning services, and food services. Dorothy's research interests include: service as the unifying theme of quality in adult learning; qualitative research methods including auto/biography, and appreciative inquiry; and the history of women's activism, particularly the legacy of social action of the Canadian Woman's Christian Temperance Union in contemporary service organizations that also draw on popular education methods to address substance abuse, and family violence.

Wendy Kraglund-Gauthier — Editor and Instructional Designer
Wendy joined us in September 2007 as the Editor-Instructional Designer for the School of Education and the Departments of Adult Education and Continuing & Distance Education. In addition to editorial support for graduate students' theses, she provides guidance in the area of instructional design as the Continuing & Distance Education department's distance education courses and programs continue to evolve.
Wendy has a BA, BEd and Master of Adult Education from StFX and is currently working her way through a BBA, Honours in Leadership in her "spare time," and is researching mentoring relationships. In February 2008, she began her PhD studies in Education through the University of South Australia. Wendy's research interests include e-learning, career transitions, career portfolio development, and adult literacy. |

Angela began working with the Department of Adult Education in July, 1984. She worked full time until the fall of 1997 at which time she began her job sharing arrangement with Denise Morrow. Over the years, she has met many interesting adult educators from across Canada, the United States and Overseas. Angela has served on the Personnel Advisory Committee and the Pension Plan Committee at St.FX U. She is married and has 2 children, 3 step-children and 6 grandchildren who affectionately call her “Baba”. Her interests include spending time with family, doing crafts, gardening and reading. Denise Morrow

Denise started working in a job-share position with Angela in the Adult Education Department in March 1997. They love their working schedule and it seems to work well for the department.
Over the years Denise has held part time positions in the Service Learning Department, CAUT, was Business Manager for CJSAE and does transcribing work for several faculty.
She has lived in Antigonish since 1993 and is married with two children. She keeps very busy with several hobbies, volunteers on the parent’s committee at her children’s school and of course taxiing her children around!
