Iris Delgado received her BFA in Art Education from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and her MFA from Guanajuato, Mexico. For a number of years she taught Spanish and Fine Arts on a part-time basis at St. Francis Xavier University. Since 1985 she has been co-owner of Irilin Designs, doing public and private commissions in stained glass. Currently she is head of the Department of Art at StFX.

Janette Fecteau graduated from StFX in 1990 with a general BA. Growing up on the Northumberland Strait in Antigonish county, she formed an appreciation for the changing forms, colours, and textures in nature. She has a lifelong interest in textile and clothing design, and enjoys working with wool, cotton, linen, and silk. She has been doing batik since 1985. Her travels to Nepal, India, Europe, England, and Guatemala have enabled her to compare many different types of textiles. Janette enjoys working with students, helping them develop the skills of batik and seeing their unique creations emerge.

Kate Georgallas received her BA in Art Education at Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. She also has a degree in theatre from the University of Ottawa. Kate has taught various courses in the Department of Art at StFX, including drawing, painting and mixed media. As well as teaching Kate is a full-time artist working in oils, watercolours and printmaking. She has exhibited in galleries across Nova Scotia and her work can be seen locally at Lyghtesome Gallery in Antigonish. Kate is a native of Prince Edward Island and now makes her home in St. Andrews, Nova Scotia. She and her family live on a small hobby farm which is the source of her imagery and inspiration.

Murray Gibson studied graphic design and textiles at the Alberta College of Art & Design, from which he graduated with an Honours Diploma in Textiles in 1985. He later obtained his MA Textiles from Goldsmith's College, The University of London (UK). He has also trained in Computer Graphics at Sheridan College. Murray has taught numerous Adult Education classes in tapestry weaving and design, as well as developing and teaching a Textile Arts programme for Nunavut Arctic College in Pangnirtung, Baffin Island. His tapestries hang in numerous private, corporate, and public collections across Canada, the United States, Austria, and Australia.

Renaissance Art Researcher Dr. Sharon Gregory
Erasmus Canada Research Chair in Renaissance Humanism at StFX

Sharon Gregory studied painting and printmaking at the Alberta College of Art and Design, and art history at the University of Calgary and Queen’s University in Kingston. In 1999 she obtained her PhD in Art History from the Courtauld Institute, University of London (UK). She taught courses in Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque art for several years at Queen’s and at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, and now holds the Erasmus Canada Research Chair in Renaissance Humanism at StFX. Her primary research interest is in Italian Renaissance art. She has published several articles on Renaissance prints and book illustrations; on the artist and first art historian, Giorgio Vasari; and on the painter Jacopo Pontormo.

Gerry Hills resides in Lakevale just outside Antigonish where his studio is located. He works in oil, watercolour, pen & ink and etching. His studio overlooks St. George's Bay and many of his subjects reflect the local setting. He studied art in London, Ontario, and at the Ottawa School of Art. He has attended numerous courses and workshops over the years. Since 1995, most of his time has been spent etching although he still works occasionally in other mediums. Gerry Hills' work can be viewed locally at Down to Earth Framing and Lyghtesome Gallery.

Sharon Jan.jpg Sharon Jan
New Zealand born Sharon Jan began her art training with her mother, an accomplished watercolourist. Sharon continued her art education as she traveled the globe including studying with international artists. She also studied with a number of our StFX art faculty when completing her BA. Sharon has given numerous workshops and courses through continuing education programs. Her media include watercolour, pastel, oil, and acrylic. Although Sharon is well known for her exquisite florals, she considers everything around her to be a possible subject.

Tila Killman Dr. Tila Kellman
Tila Kellman received her MA (art history) and Ph. D. (Social & Political Thought) from York University. Interested in art reception and the critique of identity, she published Figuring Redemption: Resighting My Self in the Art of Michael Snow in 2002. She writes for Arts Atlantic, and curatorial essays on artists’ practices.

Michael MacFarlane, an Antigonish native, developed his interest in art at StFX where he received his BA Hons. Psychology in 1997. Michael continued his study of art at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, earning his BFA Major in Fine Art in 2001. Spending six months of his BFA in India and Italy, he developed his love of sketching. This practice informs Michael's bold paintings in oil and acrylic.

Gillian McCulloch, a painter in still-life and landscapes, has, in recent years, become well known for her expressive portrait work that captures the image and spirit of her subjects. Her work features large oils on canvas, etchings, chalks, watercolours, and wood block prints. Earlier portraits include Dr. Helen Creighton and film maker Lulu Keating, art educator and painter Alice Hoskins and poet Rita Joe. Now living in Antigonish, Gillian McCulloch was born in Halifax and studied fine arts at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, and illustration at Sheridan College in Brampton, Ontario. Two recent murals are on display in the Green Room of the Bauer Theatre on the StFX campus. Represented by Lyghtesome Gallery. Her current exhibition is Pandora’s Box.

A native of Nova Scotia, Margaret Nicholson is a graduate of StFX (BA'73) and the Technical University of Nova Scotia, now Daltech (B.E.D.'85, B.Arch'87). Since 1985 she has exhibited in public and private galleries across Canada. Prior to her arrival at StFX, she taught drawing and painting in Ottawa for ten years.

Born in Saskatchewan, Linda Quigley studied pastels while living in Pennsylvania. After acceptance into the Pittsburgh Society of Artists, she regularly exhibited in group shows and received awards for her work. She was a member of, and regularly exhibited with, a studio cooperative. In 1996 one of her works was awarded first place in the Annual National Pastel show at LaFond Gallery in Pittsburgh. Since moving to Antigonish she has taught Etching at StFX, is currently teaching Art History, and has introduced Pastels to the curriculum. She believes that students will be enthusiastic about the exciting possibilities that pastels bring to any subject or style, whether abstract or detailed realism.

Julia Redgrave received her fine art education at Sheridan College and the Ontario College of Art (now Ontario College of Art and Design - OACD). From 1983 to 1997 she was vice-president of College Grant Pottery, a fine porcelain production studio in Antigonish County, and is presently a principal in Redgull Incorporated, a multi-faceted media and environmental design studio. Julia has been a drawing instructor at StFX since 1997. Her work is represented by Lyghtesome Gallery in Antigonish and Destination Gallery in Parrsboro.

Bill is a signature member of both CSPWC and TWSA . He studied watercolor with prominent US watercolorists Carlton Plummer AWS, Bill Vrscak AWS, and Arne Westerman AWS. A professional artist who paints every day, Bill runs his own gallery in Cape Breton for the tourist season and is also represented by Lyghtesome Gallery Antigonish, ASAR Halifax, Moorings Gallery Mahone Bay, Waters Edge Baddeck, and Nan Mulford Gallery Rockland ME. Bill is also a printmaker and a member of the Society of Antigonish Printmakers and the Nova Scotia Society of Printmakers. His artwork is included in the Nova Scotia Art Bank and in many public, corporate and private collections around the world. Bill organizes the weekly life drawing at StFX, which is open to anyone with an interest in life drawing.

Brian G Segal is President and Creative Director of Redgull Incorporated, a design studio located in Antigonish County, Nova Scotia. Brian has been active in illustration, graphic design, product and packaging design for 30 years. After studies in Montreal, he began his career in the news media as a cartoonist and illustrator. Over the years he has worked in all aspects of graphic arts including design, illustration, photography, environmental design, and, since its inception, Internet site development and architecture. Brian has taught a number of courses in both the creative and business ends of the visual arts. In 1999 Brian, fulfilling a lifetime ambition, conceived of and began developing a comic strip, Eb 'n Flo, now on the Internet in color and published weekly in the Casket in black and white. Brian is a professional member (MGDC) of the Graphic Designers Association of Canada.

Anna Syperek studied painting, drawing and art history at York University in Toronto, before moving to Antigonish. In 1977, she went back to school at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax, N.S. to study printmaking, earning her BFA in 1980. She then returned to Antigonish to set her own etching/printmaking studio. Syperek is well known for her etchings, watercolours and recent oils. The inspiration for Anna Syperek's poetic realism comes from an intuitive rapport with her own surroundings, in and about the town and county of Antigonish. Her work can be found in galleries in the Maritimes, Ontario, Quebec, and British Columbia, in the Canada Council Art Bank, the Nova Scotia Art Bank, Petro Canada, Via Rail, Canadian Airlines, and other corporate collections, and in numerous private collections across Canada and the United States. Maritimes Odile Tetu
Odile Tetu began her professional career over 20 years ago after attending universities in Ottawa and Monreal, were she studied under masters Michel Goulet and Pierre Granche. Tetu has had eight solo art exhibitions and her detailed botanical studies of insects and birds were exhibited at the Botanical Gardens in Montreal and the Frederiksberg Botanical Gardens in Copenhaen, Denmark. In 1993, Tetu was invited by Sola Gallery in Itaca, New York to take part in a show with Cornell University's botanical illustrator Bente Starcke King. In 1996, after moving to Antigonish county, the StFX Biology department sponsored an exhibition of her work at the StFX Art Gallery because of her works inspiring scientific and artistic qualities. Tetu now paints and etches the maritime landscape. She relies upon the strength and beauty of nature for inspiration. She has been a member of the Society of Antigonish Printmakers since 1996.

Maritimes Jannette Vusich
Jannette Vusich studied studio art in the BealArt programme in London, Ontario, before going on to earn an Honours B.A. in art history at the University of Toronto in 2002. She is currently completing her dissertation on Italian Renaissance painter Fra Bartolommeo, and expects to receive her PhD in the History of Art from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore by the end of 2008. She has taught courses in Renaissance art and culture at Johns Hopkins University, the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, and Colorado College in Colorado Springs.

Autumn Celebration Ruth Young
A freelance visual communication designer, adult educator, and artist, Young received her Master of Adult Education (2003) from StFX University and her Bachelor of Design in Visual Communications Design (1990) from NSCAD University. She won a GDC Atlantic Canada Graphic Design Award (1990) for her visual literacy workshops. Her series of retrospective theatre posters are on permanent display at StFX's Bauer Theatre. Young's work has been exhibited in duo and group shows in Canada and Japan. For two years in the mid-90's, she taught English in Japan. She holds a CELTA certificate from Cambridge University. Ruth's recent freelance work includes Molly Thomason CD and website design, Great Blue Heron Writing Workshop ad campaign and print material, and The Alcove Bistro & Lounge signage, ads, and print material. Ruth is currently on the board of our local arts and culture council GAPACC. She co-facilitated a five session pilot, Creative Expressions, in conjunction with the StFX Counselling Centre autumn 2009.
