Bonnie MacIsaac & Mary Murphy

The mainstay of our Department, Bonnie and Mary are our secretaries which truly run the place!

Randy Lauff

Randy teaches Comparative Anatomy of Vertebrates (Biol 343) and instructs the labs in Introductory Cell Biology (Biol 111) and Comparative Vertebrate Physiology (Biol 304).

His research focuses on the ecologies of the Boreal Owl, Aegolius funereus and Northern Saw-whet Owl, Aegolius acadicus, by using a network of nest boxes, primarily in northern Cape Breton and the eastern mainland of Nova Scotia. Randy also curates the zoological collections and helps out with the herbarium.     Homepage

John Bueglas

John teaches the Ecology (203) and Genetics (204) labs and is a marker for Microbes in Human Biology (115). He became a member of the St. FX biology family in 2007 after creating and implementing a biological control program on Purple Loosestrife for Duck’s Unlimited and operating an aquatic plant nursery for 12 years with his wife, Rollande and his son, Jeff. John graduated from the University of Guelph with a Master’s Degree in Entomology and Biological Control (1995).

Thesis: An ecological investigation of Acanthoscelides tenuis Bottimer and its impact on Lythrum salicaria L. (purple loosestrife) in southern Ontario.

In his “free” time he builds waterfalls and ponds for homeowners and various organizations.

Regina Cozzi

Regina teaches the labs for Introductory Cell Biology (Biol 111) and Diversity of Life (Biol 112). She also does research for Dr. W.S. Marshall, focusing on the hormonal regulation of ion transport in teleost fish membranes and in human airway epithelial cells. She has a background in Molecular Biology & Biotechnology (B.Sc.) and in Environmental Immunotoxicology (M.Sc.).

Leslie Buckland-Nicks

Leslie teaches the Microbiology (Biol 315) and Genetics Laboratories (Biol 204) and prepares media for Environmental Microbiology (Biol 470).
Leslie coordinated the writing of lectures and Instructor's manual for the eXcel Science Program for StFX.
Her current research is characterizing proteins found in dimorphic parasperm of Fusitriton, by electrophoresis.

Kris Hunter

Kris teaches the labs for Anatomy and Physiology, Bio251/Bio252. He joined the St FX Biology Department in 2006 from UBC where he was working on his Ph.D. in behaviour and muscle physiology of salmon.  In his spare time, Kris works with Habitat Unlimited and the St. Mary's River Association.

Chris Marchand

Chris teaches the Human anatomy and physiology (251/252) labs and assists in marking and other duties whenever needed. He became a member of the StFX biology team in 2008. Before coming to StFX Chris was a high school teacher locally and in the Halifax Regional School Board. Chris is also, periodically a research assistant, with the N.S. Department of Inland Fisheries, which fits nicely into his obsession with angling. Chris is also an accomplished artist, focusing on wood sculpture and painting. Most recently Chris has focused his efforts on his family, namely his wife Christine and his baby daughter Chantal.

Norma Mitchell

Norma does lab and media preparation for Microbiology and marking for a host of courses. Norma received her B.Sc. in Biology (StFX 2001). She cares for almost 100 tropical freshwater fish in four tanks and moderates an online forum for the East Coast Aquarium Society (http://www.eastcoastaquariumsociety.ca). She also has several snakes and a dog. Somewhere in that menagerie is also a husband, Sean, two boys and a girl.

Justin Paturel

Synopsis coming soon.

Leah Rogers

Bio coming soon!

Monica Schuegraf

Monica has returned to us after successfully completing her M.Sc. She is teaching in the Biomechanics and Introductory Zoology labs.

George Robertson - Microscopist

George is the microscopist for the department. Right now his research interests include:

1)     Ultrastructural study of algae (collaborated with Dr. D Garbary).

2)   Immunolocalization of carbohydrates in cell wall of root hair of Arabidopsis (collaborated with Dr. M. Galway).

3)   Histological study of lungs of birds (collaborated with Drs. A. Brackenbury and E. DeMont).

Anne Louise MacDonald – Manager of Animal and Plant Care

Anne Louise has been in charge of the StFX Animal Care Facility and the J. Bruce Brown greenhouse since 1982, ensuring the health of live specimens used in research and teaching. In 1995 she received the Canada Council on Animal Care award for the best small-sized animal care facility in Canada.

Anne Louise is currently working part-time for StFX and part-time writing children’s books.

The rest of her time is spent enjoying her gardens, her two horses and teaching natural horse and hoof care and therapeutic trimming on-line and through clinics and seminars.

Rollande Dubé - Animal Care Facility

Rollande graduated from the University of Guelph with honors in Biology minoring in Botany and Forestry. For the past 13 years she operated an aquatic plant nursery, landscape design and landscape installation company. She has experience caring for and handling a wide variety of animals from the exotic to the standard pet and farm breeds. She now resides in Pomquet where she hopes to devote more time to her bird watching pursuits and keeping up with her native French language.
