
Séamus MacFloinn, 2009-10 visiting Irish lecturer in the Department of Celtic Studies, will present the talk "'Sure it's the same as back home' An irish speaker's observations on the current state of the Irish Gaelic language in Ireland and the view from Nova Scotia," focusing on contemporary Irish language politics and reflections on his experience regarding Scottish Gaelic in Nova Scotia. The public is invited to attend a lecture by Dr. Ken Nilsen of the Department of Celtic Studies at StFX University. The paper will look at the evidence that exists for the presence of the Irish language in Eastern Canada. Although undoubtedly thousands of native Irish speakers immigrated to Canada in the period 1700-1900 they have left very few traces of their language. The paper will conclude with a brief discussion of why the Irish situation was so different from that of Scottish Gaelic. Nicholson Hall Room 16 (2nd floor) at 3:00 p.m. All are welcome.
The Celtic Studies Department at St.F.X. University will hold a Gaelic Language Day on Saturday, March 20th, 2010. Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m., with classes - for Children, Beginners, Intermediate, and Advanced - beginning at 10:00 a.m., all at Nicholson hall, 6th Floor.
Fees: $15 Adults, $5 Seniors, $2 Students (high school and college), Free for children and native Gaelic speakers; Special family rate: $15.00. Fees may be paid at registration.

Dr Newton's book Warriors of the Word was nominated by the Folklore Society (of London) for its 2009 Katharine Briggs Award. The judges' official report notes: "Michael Newton's Warriors of the Word: The World of the Scottish Highlanders (Birlinn), approaches the notion of 'word and text' in a very up-to-date way without losing itself in jargon and theory and builds on work on Highland verbal sources collected by a number of significant modern scholars and collectors."
A beginning of year Celtic Studies welcome lecture was held on Th 1 Oct at 7PM in PS 1072. The lecture was given by Lewis MacKinnon, CEO of the Nova Scotia Office for Gaelic Affairs.
The Alexander MacLean Sinclair Symposium and Clan Maclean Atlantic 30th Anniversary Celebration was co-hosted by the St FX Celtic Department, the Clan Maclean Heritage Trust (Scotland), and Clan Maclean Atlantic Canada. Speakers included Sir Lachlan Maclean (28th chief of Clan Maclean), Ian MacLean, Dr John Campbell Sinclair, Dr Rob Dunbar, Dr Alasdair MacLean Sinclair, Dr Michael Linkletter, Dr Ken Nilsen, and Susan Cameron.
Meaghan O'Handley and Emily MacKinnon, two second year St FX education students with degrees in Celtic Studies from St FX, will be travelling to the Isle of Skye in Scotland in March to complete their final teaching practicum at a Gaelic primary school in Portree. Read full story >>

Three new courses have been approved for the Celtic Studies calendar: Celtic Paganism; Celtic Christianity; Gaelic song, music, and dance.
In July 2008, the Celtic Studies department at St FX hosted this bi-annual conference. This is the first time since the conference was begun in 2000 that it has been held outside of Scotland.
