Canadian Certificate in Youth Ministry Studies (CCYMS)

CCYMS is a training program for adults in ministry with youth, aged 10-19, in parish, school and community settings. It equips leaders with practical tools and techniques needed for creative and comprehensive youth ministry. This eight-course professional training program is of interest to:

  • Youth Ministry Coordinators
  • Volunteer Youth Ministers
  • Pastors and Pastoral Workers
  • Teachers, Guidance Counselors & Parents
  • High School Chaplains & Campus Ministers

St. Francis Xavier University works in collaboration with the Centre for Ministry Development [http://secure.cmdnet.org/Index.cfm] and Canadian Ministry Support Services, as the Eastern Canadian site offering courses in the CCYMS program. Participants in this training program come to campus each summer to take part in one, two or three courses offered in a one-week period [a minimum of 14 hours of on-site instruction per course is required]. Reading and assignments are completed at home and submitted for marking. The program is highly regarded throughout Canada and the United States and may be taken for personal enrichment or for credit toward a Certificate in Youth Ministry Studies. The courses are offered on a rotating basis over three summer sessions per cycle.

TO RECEIVE A CERTIFICATE

The Canadian Certificate in Youth Ministry Studies will be awarded by St. Francis Xavier University and Canadian Ministry Support Services to students who:

  1. Participate in all 8 courses (14 hours of on-site instruction required, per course)
  2. Complete assignments for each course
  3. Complete a Certificate Learning Journal over the period of study
  4. Submit the assignments and Learning Journal as directed by Canadian Ministry Support Services
  5. Demonstrate a fundamental understanding of the core areas of Catholic belief: Old Testament and New Testament Scriptures, Christology, Ecclesiology, Christian Ministry, Sacraments, Morality and Social Justice
  6. Participate in one Small Group Learning Team meeting per course, organized geographically, to discuss the general session content and course readings.

Notes:

  • These are general certificate requirements; details may vary with the sponsoring organization.
  • The certificate is accepted as credit towards one course (MNST 160) in the Diploma in Ministry Program at St. Francis Xavier University.
  • These courses are eligible for graduate credit at the following institutions:
    • Newman Theological College, Edmonton, Alberta
    • Assumption University, Windsor, Ontario
    • Faculty of Theology, University of St. Michael's College, Toronto School of Theology, Toronto

COURSES LEADING TO THE CERTIFICATE

Principles of Youth Ministry
This course presents the fundamental principles for developing effective, comprehensive ministry with younger and older adolescents. The course:

  • Presents the vision and principles of comprehensive youth ministry
  • Examines the dynamics of promoting healthy adolescent development and faith growth
  • Presents a model for ministry development which incorporates developmentally appropriate youth programming; strengthens family life; involves young people as integral members of the faith community; and collaborates with civic organizations to promote positive youth development.

Developing Youth Ministry
Note: Participants must take Principles of Youth Ministry before this course.
This course explores the role of the leader in Christian ministry by examining the theories, approaches, and processes for effective leadership. Leaders will diagnose their own giftedness for ministry, as well as techniques for calling forth the gifts of those to whom and with whom they minister. The course combines theory presentations with experiential learning about the skills and processes for:

  • Collaborating with a youth ministry team and with the community to do effective youth ministry
  • Inviting, preparing and nurturing adult and youth leaders in ministry
  • Developing youth ministry through a process which includes planning, implementing and evaluating youth ministry programming.

Foundations of Christian Leadership
This course invites Christian leaders to look at the principles and priorities that guide their lives. It presents a model of principle-centered leadership and Christian spirituality that provides tools for synchronizing activities with principles and priorities. Participants develop a personal mission statement and strategies for self-care, personal renewal, leadership development and growth in ministry.

Skills For Christian Ministry
Skills for Christian Ministry addresses the theories and skills that ministers need to work with and through people. Participants will develop a practical, working understanding of leadership processes and skills necessary for empathic communication; group dynamics and development; facilitation of group processes; win/win negotiating; and conflict management. The course stresses the application of these skills to various ministry settings, problems, and issues.

Fostering the Faith Growth of Youth through Prayer and Worship
This course investigates the role that Christian worship and sacraments play in fostering the spiritual growth of youth. Participants develop the theoretical and practical skill necessary for:

  • designing youth retreat experiences
  • preparing and celebrating liturgy and worship experiences
  • fostering the prayer life of youth and preparing prayer services.

The goal of the course is to develop a realistic, integrated, and practical approach to worship within a comprehensive ministry to youth.

Fostering the Faith Growth of Youth through Pastoral Care
This course explores the principles and methods of caring for young people and their families through pastoral care programs. It develops an understanding of family systems, adolescent development, and the scope of pastoral care. The course goals are to equip ministers with tools for promoting healthy adolescent development and developing preventative interventions for families with adolescents.

Fostering the Faith Growth of Youth through Justice and Service
This course explores the theological and scriptural foundations for engaging young people in the work of justice and service. Participants develop the practical processes and skills for creating justice education programming, developing service and action opportunities, and nurturing the social consciousness and spirituality of young people.

Fostering the Faith Growth of Youth through Evangelization & Catechesis
This course explores the theological understandings of faith, discipleship, and Catholic identity and a contemporary vision and approach for evangelization and catechesis with young people. Participants develop practical approaches, strategies, and skills for:

  • doing outreach with youth
  • sharing the Good News (storytelling)
  • creating evangelization experiences, and incorporating evangelization into all youth ministry activities
  • organizing a catechetical curriculum
  • designing effective learning experiences for adolescents

FACULTY – CANADIAN CERTIFICATE IN YOUTH MINISTRY STUDIES

Fr. Santo Arrigo, C.Ss.R., B.A., MDiv. (St. Michael's Faculty of Theology, Toronto), is a Redemptorist Priest currently serving as the Coordinator of Redemptorist Vocation Ministry for the Edmonton-Toronto Province, and as the Associate Pastor of St. Patrick's Parish in Toronto. He is a former member of the Redemptorist Youth Mission Team, a graduate of the Canadian Certificate in Youth Ministry Studies, and has experience in Parish Youth Ministry, Diocesan Youth Events, Young Adult Ministry and Inner-City Ministry. Fr. Santo also serves as the North American representative for Redemptorist Youth and Vocation Ministry in Rome.

Andrew Bartley, MDiv, MBA facilitates leadership and organizational development as President of Platinum Leadership Inc. He also serves as Episcopal Director of Pastoral Leadership for the Diocese of London, where he supervises pastoral, strategic and personnel planning and diocesan outreach ministries. Previously Andrew served as a regional coordinator, diocesan youth ministry specialist, parish coordinator of youth ministry, elementary and secondary school teacher, and youth services worker for adolescents in detention. In addition to the MDiv and MBA, he holds a BA, BEd and Diploma in Adult Education. He is a qualified administrator of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, and has taught the Canadian Certificate in Youth Ministry Studies since 1994. Jean Beneteau is the Coordinator of Youth Ministry and Pastoral Minister for the community of St. John the Baptist in Amherstburg, ON. She has completed a Masters in Religious Education from Assumption University and has a Bachelor of Social Work and a Certificate in Youth Ministry Studies. She has parish and diocesan level experience in ministry and has also worked professionally as a social worker.

Pat Csinos, BA, is the Coordinator of Youth/Young Adult Ministry for the Edmonton-Toronto Province of the Redemptorists and the Director of C.C.Y.M.S. She is a graduate of Laurentian University and is currently studying to obtain her Masters in the Art of Ministry and Spirituality. Pat has five years experience working as a parish youth ministry coordinator and five years experience working as a diocesan youth ministry coordinator. Pat is married and the mother of two ‘young adult’ children. She is also a Lay Missionary of the Most Holy Redeemer.

Fr. Leo English C.Ss.R. is a Redemptorist priest who is currently the Pastor of St. Teresa’s Parish in St. John’s NL. Prior to this, he was engaged in community development work with Native People and parish ministry at St. Mary’s Parish in Saskatoon. He holds a BSW in Social Work from Memorial University in Newfoundland, a BA in Philosophy from the University of Waterloo, and a Masters of Divinity from St. Michael’s College, University of Toronto. A graduate of the Certificate in Youth Ministry Studies, he has experience in social work, youth ministry, and parish ministry.

Mariette Martineau, a CMD staff member, is a project specialist with the Generations of Faith Project. Her youth ministry experience and education include a Certificate in Youth Ministry Studies, an Advanced Certificate in Youth Ministry, a Masters in Pastoral Ministry from Loyola University in Chicago, a Certificate in Adult Education and many years of experience in parish, diocesan, and regional youth and catechetical ministry.

Miles Meyers is the Catholic Education Services Coordinator for the Regina Catholic School board. Prior to completing his teaching degree he was the Coordinator of Youth Ministry for the Archdiocese of Regina. Himes has a Masters of Religious Education degree from Seattle University and a Bachelors and post-graduate diploma in Education from the University of Regina. He has served on the National Catechetical Advisory Committee on Youth and has extensive background in catechetic, liturgy, scripture and retreat work with youth.

Anne Walsh is a native Newfoundlander. She holds a BA (Education) from Memorial University, a Diploma in Fine Arts from the University of Calgary, and a Master of Religious Education from St. Michael’s College. She is a candidate for the Doctor of Ministry degree at St. Stephen's College, Edmonton, Alberta. She has experience in teaching, curriculum support and development in religious education, university chaplaincy, parish and youth ministry, and has completed her Canadian Certificate in Youth Ministry Studies. She served as a pastoral minister in Holy Redeemer Parish, served by the Redemptorists in Sudbury, Ontario for 6 years and is currently the Coordinator of Adult Faith Formation with the Archdiocese of St. John’s.

Anne is a member of the National Advisory Committee on Adult Catechesis, working in an advisory capacity to the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, and co-chair of both the Commission for Partnership in Mission of the Edmonton-Toronto Province of the Redemptorists, and the Redemptorist North American Commission for Partnership in Mission.

Corinne Walsh, MA, LLM (Cand.) is a trainer, mediator and coach who collaborates extensively with corporate, non-profit and faith-based organizations. As CEO of Platinum Leadership Inc., Corinne works with leaders and teams to enhance performance and strive for excellence. She previously served as a CYM in parishes in Ontario and Newfoundland, and has offered youth ministry consulting services for a wide variety of rural and urban dioceses for the past 10 years. She teaches part-time at King’s University College at UWO, and is completing a Master of Law degree specializing in Conflict Resolution. In addition to BA and MA degrees, Corinne holds a Diploma in Adult Education and certificates in alternative dispute resolution, business administration, pastoral planning and youth ministry. She is a qualified administrator of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and can be reached at cwalsh@platinumleadership.com

Dean Woodbeck holds a B.A. in Sociology and Psychology from the University of Manitoba, a Certificate in Youth Ministry Studies, a Certificate in Advanced Studies in Ministry, and has competed course work for a Masters of Theological Studies (Newman College). He has worked both as a parish and diocesan youth ministry coordinator and is currently a trainer for YouthLeader and Young Neighbors in Action in Canada and the United States.
