Philosophy Awards and Prizes

The Father Charles R. MacDonald Medal
The Father Charles R. MacDonald Memorial Medal is the Department’s highest award to a graduating student, and is normally awarded at convocation. It honours Fr. MacDonald, who taught at StFX from 1946 to 1974.

The Father Edo Gatto Award
The Father Edo Gatto Memorial Award is presented to a student who shows excellence in mediaeval philosophy – particularly in Department’s courses in that area. It was established in honour of Fr. Gatto (BA 1952), who died tragically in a motor vehicle accident in December 1991.

Student Quotes

"I highly recommend a degree in philosophy from St. F.X.. Philosophy opens one to the perennial questions about metaphysics, ethics, epistemology, logic, science and human nature itself. I greatly value the education I received from the philosophy department at X. The department's professors are a source of wisdom and understanding to students who are encouraged and challenged in their studies. An education in philosophy enables one to think critically, discuss issues intelligently and pursue a diversity of careers. Philosophy at X is an valuable opportunity which students should not miss."
