Tuesday, 5 February 2008, the department welcomes Ms. Diana Youdell, Special Advisor to the Director General Afghanistan Task Force at the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade.  She is currently on temporary assignment from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).  Ms. Youdell has recently returned from Afghanistan where she served as Head of Development Programs for CIDA.  Under her guidance, more than $100 million of CIDA funds was disbursed to support Government of Afghanistan national programs, including microfinance, sustainable livelihood, gender equality and girls' education.
  Ms. Youdell will be speaking on Canada: Making a Difference in Afghanistan, at the Physical Sciences Complex, Room 3046 at 7 p.m.  The department welcomes all members of the university community and the general public.
   There will also be a roundtable discussion group on Wednesday afternoon, at 2 p.m. in the Students' Union Building

Wednesday, 21 November, the department of Political Science presented "The Road to Kandahar" with Colonel Steve Noonan, MSC, CD.  Currently with the Canadian Expeditionary Force Command, Colonel Noonan is responsible to coordinate all Canadian Forces operations overseas.  He is a veteran of the Canadian combat engineers, having spent time in Germany, Croatia and Yugoslavia. March 2005-2006, Colonel Noonan was the Task Force Commander Afghanistan, Roto 0. The roundtable discussion, "The Future of the Canadian Forces," Student Union Building Council Chambers @1530h was well attended and the public lecture, which was held in the Physical Science Building 1072 @ 1940h was an interesting blend of presentation and questions - well received but all in attendance.

Wednesday, 26 September, the departments of History and Political Science will sponsored guest lecturer and StFX Alumnus ('67), Mr. Sam Webb, National Chair of the Communist Party USA.  Mr. Webb's address is entitled 'Last Dance for George Bush? Peace, Justice and the 2008 Elections: A Communist Viewpoint. 

Graduation, 6 May 2007.  The department graduated some 45 students (Majors, Advanced Majors and Honours) at this year's record breaking ceremonies (X had its larges graduating body this year).  Department Chair, Dr. Yvon Grenier, received the President's Research Award.

  Yvon Grenier, a professor and chair of the Political Science Department, is a scholar and researcher of international reputation in his field. He has been invited to speak on issues related to his research as well as edit and introduce a volume of the work of Nobel Prize winner Octavio Paz.
  Since joining our Faculty in 1991, Dr. Grenier has been acknowledged by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada as a receipient of several highly competitive research grants. He has published three books (one of which has also been translated into Spanish), and is the author of over 40 publications in books or in nationally and internationally recognized journals. He is generous with his time both on campus and in the larger community, and is a mentor to his students.
  In short, his scholarly contributions to political sicence, his profession and the community are significant. Highly regarded by his peers and students alike, Dr. Grenier is a wonderful addition to the list of distinguished researchers who have earned the President's Research Award. (Communications Office).

Retired Political Science professor Dr. John B. Stewart was conferred with a Doctor of Laws Honour for his "outstanding personal accomplishment and professional leadership." Erica Traversy, an honours graduate in Political Science, was the co-recipient of the Dr. John B. Stewart Prize (along with Caitlin Hughes) and also the winner of the annual Kontak Prize in Political Science for her paper "Globalization and the HIV/AIDS Pandemic."
