This course examines the structures and theories of the criminal justice system in Canada, with contrasting references to the United States and other western countries. Elements of the system studied include policing, the court system, institutional and non-institutional correctional practices, the role of politicians, victims' rights organizations, and the general public. Regular class sessions will be supplemented when possible with guest lectures, attendance at court sessions and field trips. Prerequisite: SOCI 250.
