LEARNING DISABILITIES

Learning disabilities are neurological in origin and interfere with a person's ability to store, process, or produce information. They create a "gap" between one's ability and performance.(The National Center for Learning Disabilities) Statistics have placed the number of persons with learning disabilities at 15% or more. A learning disability can affect a person's ability to read, write or speak. It can also affect a person's social skills. Learning disabilities are often difficult to recognize because they are a hidden disability and not easily diagnosed.

Learning disabilities make up a large part of the disabilities found here on campus. The reason is that there are so many different types of learning disabilities. Students with learning disabilities use a variety of accommodations because their needs, and the degree of their disability, vary. Some students only use extra time to write their exams, while others may use books on tape, note takers or dictaphones.
