Dr. Angela Gillis receives Women in Excellence Award

Nursing professor Dr. Angela Gillis was honoured recently with the Women in Excellence award by the Canadian Progress Club.

Dr. Gillis won in the category of education and research for her work at the StFX School of Nursing. StFX University President Dr. Sean Riley, along with Dr. Gillis' colleges, family and friends witnessed her receiving the honour in Halifax.

Dr. Gillis says she was humbled by the award. "It really meant a lot to me for the Canadian Progress Club to recognize nursing achievements," said Dr. Gillis. The Canadian Progress Club supports charitable foundations and Special Olympics. Locally, the Canadian Progress Club Halifax-Cornwallis Chapter supports Phoenix Youth Programs, using the Women in Excellence Awards dinner as a fundraiser for the programs.

Nominations for the Women in Excellence award begin a year in advance and are deliberated by a selection committee. Dr. Gillis said she was surprised by the honour because she was never involved in the organization.

Dr. Gillis has taught at the School of Nursing for 26 years and has held the position of chair of the school for 15 years.
