Just as sustainable and fair development requires change at all levels—from the personal to the global—so does the equitable treatment of women. At the same time, unless women become more aware of their position and condition and are helped to organize to change it, untargeted "community level" development interventions often increase women's subordination and workload.
It was in light of this reality that Coady staff invited a wide range of community-level practitioners to reflect on their programs. Creating a Balance was published to express their hopes, concerns and visions for a balanced approach to development.
