In addition to the Diploma Program, the Institute also offers eight short certificate courses each year, which are open to development practitioners from the North and South.
Conducted by Coady staff, the Certificate Programs are highly participatory, providing candidates with an opportunity to share ideas and to exchange experiences with each other and with participants in the Institute's Diploma Program. A wide variety of presentation, case study, and experiential and participatory educational methods are used.

Raoul Suryamani
India
Raoul graduated in 2000 with a Certificate in Community-Based Microfinance. He is the project Manager for CARE-India in the city of Ranchi. On a daily basis he works with community members who are faced with abject poverty and limited opportunities. In an effort to strengthen his community, Raoul leads a project aimed at providing the poor with access to financial resources. Through a microfinance project initiated by CARE-India and three local development organizations in Ranchi, positive change is becoming a reality for many poor tribal households. The program is helping to increase family income and provide opportunities for women to become involved in financial decision-making. Ultimately, the project Roaul is leading encourages people to participate in the economy and strengthen their community by providing the means to invest in public utilities and basic infrastructure.

Purpose
This certificate program will provide youth with the necessary skills to build their capacities as effective leaders in development, strengthen their understanding of the development context and foster a deeper personal and collective commitment to a just society.
The program is designed for youth between 20-35 years of age with at least two years of experience in community-based development and a demonstrated commitment to youth issues. While eligible candidates do not require a university degree, a post-secondary education is considered an asset.
Fees
The cost of the three-week certificate program is $3,000. This includes $2,000 for tuition and $1,000 for room and board. All program costs are quoted in Canadian dollars and subject to revision. Partial bursaries for tuition are available through the Institute and are awarded on an as-needed basis. Candidates are fully responsible for covering the cost of their own travel and living expenses.

The emphasis will be on practical, participatory tools for analysing community economies and for developing effective community-based programs. Courses will deal with micro-enterprise development, micro-credit and savings, community economic analysis, and community economic development models.

Purpose
This innovative certificate program is designed to provide women development workers with the knowledge and skills necessary to be effective decision-makers and to advance within their organizations. The program will enhance and clarify concepts and theories of development, and critically examine various contemporary and leading edge approaches. Participants will gain specific skills in program planning and evaluation, budgeting and financial management, strategic planning and human relations. Candidates should have at least three years of field experience in community-based development, a secondary school certificate, and a good working knowledge of English.

The cost of the four-week certificate program is $3,800. This includes $2,450 for tuition and $1,350 for room and board. Program costs are subject to revision. Bursary support may be available to organizations with limited resources.

This innovative program includes an overview of the principles and practices of community-based management as it applies to resources such as fisheries, forestry, coastal habitats and watersheds. Participants will also examine specific case studies demonstrating the achievements of community-based management, the obstacles to its further development, and steps that need to be taken in the future. Participants will be encouraged to view community-based management in the context of their own situation and its implications for their work.

Participants will learn to conceptualize advocacy as a process for social and economic change, in which they will determine goals, identify capacity building and alliance building approaches, identify target audiences and measure impact.
