Certificate in Advocacy and Networking

September 12 – 30, 2005

Wherever change needs to occur . . . advocacy has a role to play.

In this age of globalization, development practitioners and other civil society representatives are increasingly finding they need to develop their capacity to become more effective advocates and to mobilize public support around common issues. They also recognize the need to be actively engaged in influencing the creation of policies and programs that affect their work at the grassroots level.

Although there are many different ways to conceptualize advocacy, this Certificate Program will focus on advocacy directed at changing the policies, positions or programs of any type of institution. This includes a small NGO, a council of elders, a multinational corporation, a government ministry, a nation state, an international agency or other institutions.

Whether the goal is to protect a fragile watershed, source funding for a maternal health clinic, promote new programs to address homelessness, enact laws to make buildings accessible for people with disabilities, or change existing laws which discriminate against women, advocacy can help to accomplish those goals.
