Women in most countries in the global South account for the majority of the informal sector activity and are the key influence on family health, access to education and general well-being. In the North, the Centre for Gender in Organizations based in the United States argues that women do not, contrary to popular belief, lack experience or skills to be in leadership. In fact, they often out-perform men, not only in relational areas such as team-building and moral support but in financial management issues as well.
The paradox is that in spite of strong resourcefulness and capacity, women still have considerably less success in being promoted to leadership positions. The reasons are multi-fold and complex including structural, political, cultural, even personal and psychological barriers.
This innovative Certificate Program is designed to address these issues by providing women in community-based development with the necessary knowledge, skills and motivation to strengthen and advance within their current commitments be they at the organizational, community or national level.
The program will enhance and clarify concepts and theories of leadership, community-based development, organizational theory and policy advocacy. By recognizing and valuing the development experiences of the candidates the program aims to build on these experiences to help them examine the gendered dimensions of their organization and work.
