Interdisciplinary Development Studies Program

The teaching staff at the Coady International Institute, working together with StFX faculty members, has established an Interdisciplinary Development Studies Program. This new program provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to examine community-based development from the perspective of more than one discipline.

Students will learn about development in Nova Scotia, other parts of Canada and abroad—within the context of such disciplines as sociology, economics, political science, anthropology, nursing and business administration. The program was designed with core and cross-listed courses to allow students to think more deeply about local models of community development (specifically the model of the Antigonish Movement) as well as models used in an international context.

Some of these courses provide undergraduates with the opportunity to attend classes along with community leaders from around the world—women and men who have traveled from various countries to participate in the Coady Institute's Diploma in Community-Based Development. Students gain the unique experience of interacting and sharing ideas with professional development workers from Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Latin America and the Caribbean.
