The 23-year-old is completing the final requirements of the Schwartz School of Business and Information Systems co-op program at Ernst & Young in Toronto - a place where new recruits typically earn a starting salary of $40,000-plus annually. Continue reading
StFX Mourns Godfather of Celtic Music

StFX is mourning the passing of legendary Celtic entertainer and Xaverian John Allan Cameron today following a lengthy battle with cancer.
The 67-year-old, originally from Mabou NS, received a Bachelor of Arts degree from StFX in 1966, and an honourary degree last year in recognition for his tireless promotion of Celtic music.
Often called the godfather of Celtic music in Canada, Cameron first made a name for himself playing strathspeys, reels and jigs on the guitar, rather than the traditional fiddle or bagpipes, on CBC’s Don Messer Show and Singalong Jubilee. He would go on to star in his own television series, grace the stage of the Grand Ole Opry, perform in Las Vegas, and gain international acclaim for his charismatic live shows. Continue reading

Mary Coyle never loses a chance to tell people about the Coady International Institute, but she says the Antigonish school’s fame in Africa likely existed long before plans for her visit there with Gov. Gen. Michaelle Jean.
“Coady is probably much better known in Africa than it is in Canada,” Ms. Coyle, the institute’s director, said in a telephone interview Friday. “We have more than 1,800 graduates in 34 African countries.” Continue reading

On November 9, over 150 local business leaders and students from the Gerald Schwartz School of Business and Information Systems gathered for the StFX Business Banquet to hear insights on the future of business from StFX alumnus Allan Ross, CEO of Calgary-based Ross Smith Energy Group.
In a speech entitled ‘Ten Rules for entrepreneurship in a computer-enabled world’, Mr. Ross, Ernst & Young’s Distinguished Entrepreneur for 2004, highlighted the profound impact new technology is having on business, tearing down borders and eliminating many barriers to entry. Continue reading

When this year’s Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to a Bangladeshi economist, Muhammad Yunus, and the Grameen Bank, for pioneering work in providing microcredit to the world’s poor, Canadians deserved to feel a certain national satisfaction.
Apart from Canada’s own long record of pioneering work in the field of microcredit, the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) was one of the institutions that provided early financial support to help Mr. Yunus launch the Grameen Bank more than 20 years ago. Continue reading
X-Women Take CIS Title

StFX scored another first over the weekend, as the X-Women took home gold in Sunday’s Canadian Interuniversity Sport Rugby Championship final against the Guelph Gryphons in London, Ont.
In their ninth straight Canadian university championship, the X-Women managed a 10-5 win that earned StFX its first national title for a women’s team.
StFX Rugby coach Mike Cavanagh called it a tremendous accomplishment; in their eight previous trips to the tournament, the X-Women scored just six wins in 27 games. Continue reading
