Global Awareness Week allows StFX students, faculty, staff and wider community to “experience the world”

St. Francis Xavier University, the Coady International Institute and the StFX Students’ Union invite all X students, Coady participants, faculty, staff and the community to come together to “experience the world” during Global Awareness Week (October 26-November 1). This will be an exceptional week-long campus-wide celebration of international culture through a series of events aimed at raising awareness about global development issues and about what each of us can do to contribute to a better world.

Global Awareness Week 2008 highlights include:

  • a keynote address by Parker Mitchel, the co-founder and co-CEO of Engineers Without Borders, speaking about: A hopeful journey: Tackling global injustices one step at a time.
  • the annual Allen J. MacEachen Lecture Series in Politics, featuring the Hon. Flora MacDonald who will speak on Afghanistan: Failed State or Fledgling Democracy
  • Screening of the documentary: Condoms, Fish & Circus Tricks
  • Cooking with Coady – global cuisine cooking class
  • Hope Out Loud! Benefit concert for Xtending Hope Partnership
  • UNICEF’s Eye See III Display (compelling photos from children in Rwanda and Liberia)
  • Daily Brown Bag Lunch series on development issues, featuring Coady participants, with a different topic each day: Human Rights, women’s issues, the environment, water and sanitation, and HIV/AIDS
  • Throughout the week, students will have an opportunity to participate in the One Promise for a Better World campaign
  • an Inter-Faith Service focusing on the Millenium Development Goals
