Mabou Port History

Mabou Coal Mines
Mabou Harbour

The community of Mabou includes Mabou Harbor and the Mabou Coal mines. The area was referred to by Nicholas Denys as Le Chadye. It is thought that Mabou is a corruption of the Mi'kmaq name of Malabo which was a shortened form of Malabokek, the meaning of which is obscure. The Mabou Mines port is known as Finlay's Point. (possibly named for one of three Beaton brothers who were early settlers in the area) Mabou Harbour has a long history with the lobster fishery that dates back to the 1870's, by the turn of the century there were two lobster canneries in the area, one at the mouth of the harbour owned by Beaton and MacInnis and the other approximately 3 miles in from the mouth of the harbour, this was owned by Captain LeMaitre. From the two ports 26 boats operate, these boats average 35.01 ft. and harvest lobster as well as rock crab. Further information will be added to this section as research continues.
