offers
LEARNING ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES (LEAP)

to students whose first language is not English.


LEAP students participate in a series of interactive classes and practical workshops designed to ease the transition to university in English.

Learning tasks provide students with opportunities to read, write, listen, and speak English in an academic setting.

LEAP is not an English as a Second Language (ESL) course. Rather, LEAP is designed to improve critical thinking and reading skills and analytical writing strategies.

LEAP is for INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
• whose first language is not
English
• who want to improve their academic English skills
• who have a minimum TOEFL score of 580/236 or an equivalent score on another test
• who will be living and learning in an English-only environment.

Students who have a TOEFL score
higher than the minimum 580/236
will also benefit from these programs.

Learning English for Academic Purposes (LEAP) provides

Individual meetings with a LEAP instructor
•Conversational vocabulary as well as academic terminology
• Reading and writing to promote critical thinking
• Opportunities to discuss and analyze academic texts
• Feedback on academic writing assignments
• A clearer understanding of the research process and how to document sources
• Information and strategies for studying, preparing for exams, and managing stress
• Individual assistance with course selection
• Introduction to cultural life in Canada and in a Canadian university


LEAP class and instructors, August 2009

LEAP 1 - 2010
August 2 - 30, 2010

Students must arrive no later than Thursday, July 29, 2010
to allow a few days to adjust to the new time zone,
complete banking and StFX paperwork.
Classes begin on Monday, August 2 at 8:30 a.m.

This four-week intensive program is designed for students who have some proficiency in English but are new to living and studying in English.

Classroom sessions are held Monday to Friday from 8:30 to 3:30 including individual meetings with the instructor.

Daily attendance and full participation
in activities are mandatory.
Punctuality is expected.

At the end of LEAP, students are encouraged to participate in the International Student Welcome Program. This is a chance for LEAP students to act as helpers to newly arriving international students, practice their English skills in everyday situations, and see other points of interest around Antigonish.
Students who do not wish to participate in this StFX-funded program are responsible for room fees and meals during these days.

Please provide the StFX Admissions department with an official English version of your transcript to insure your receive your transfer credits.

During your first year at StFX, we encourage you to live on campus where you have the opportunity to speak English on a daily basis and meet many new people.
