How to Apply For Federal Stafford & PLUS Loans to Study Outside of the United States

Accessing Loans in Four Basic Steps:
FIRST
All US students begin the process by completing a Free Application for Federal Student Assistance (FAFSA) on line at: http://www.fafsa.ed.gov
Applications can also be obtained from your local high school. Submit an Eight-Page Student Aid Report (SAR) to the University. Note: When you complete your FAFSA on-line do not enter your email address and an Eight-Page SAR will be mailed to you. Otherwise, a two-page SAR will be e-mailed by the Department of Education and that is not sufficient for Stafford or PLUS loan processing in foreign schools.

SECOND
You now must obtain a lender. You are free to choose any lender you prefer. However, St. Francis Xavier University has implemented online processing with Sallie Mae International and International Education Finance Corporation (IEFC). These lenders have provided excellent service to US students studying in foreign schools. Sallie Mae uses a completely online application option. To access their system you can visit http://www.salliemae.com/international/us_students/ International Education Finance Corporation (IEFC) uses American Student Assistance as the guarantor. To access IEFC's application process please visit www.iefc.com or call 1-888-296-4332.
