Internet, Cable & Phone Services

Yes. Each residence room is linked to the University's network and this will allow you access to the internet. In order to use this service your computer requires an Ethernet card and cable. As well, all residence buildings have wireless internet service.

Yes, there is a cable television jack in your residence room. Each lounge has a cable TV outlet as well.

How can I make long-distance telephone calls?
Making long distance calls requires a calling card. StFX will provide you with a CONNEXIONS calling card number. There is no charge for the card and no surcharge for placing calls, you are only billed for calls that you make. Your telephone bill is generated on a monthly basis and you will be responsible for paying at the StFX Business Office. Telephone bills are viewable through MesAmis.

StFX provides competitive long distance rates to students via the CONNEXIONS calling card, but you may use any company's calling card. Prepaid calling cards also work for placing long distance calls. It is up to you to make those arrangements.

What is my phone number?
The Technology Support Group (TSG) will provide information about your telephone service via email to your StFX email account in mid-August. Included will be information on how to use the Meridian Mail system (voice mail), your telephone number, your CONNEXIONS calling card number, voice mail box number and password.

On campus calling simply requires dialing the four-digit extension of the person that you are trying to reach.

To contact an on-campus student from an off-campus location, dial (902) 867-4000 and when prompted enter their four digit extension followed by the number sign (#). Professors, administration and other departments can be reached from off-campus by dialing (902) 867-xxxx (their four digit extension).

Is there a way to find out other people's phone numbers?
For the phone numbers of a resident, please call (902) 867-4000 to reach our Auto-Attendant. This feature allows callers to use the telephone keypad to spell out the person's name and transfer your call to their room.

Intercom systems/courtesy phones
Courtesy phones are located outside each residence because each residence building is locked 24 hours a day. Guests may call residents by using the courtesy phone to let them know they have arrived. Each courtesy phone and all on-campus pay phones are equipped with a direct link button for Security assistance. MSB does not have a courtesy phone; there is a porter at MSB 24 hours a day to assist guests.

Help with telephone service
The Technology Support Group, located in Nicholson Hall (NH43), has walk-in service available Mon-Fri 8am-5pm. They can be reached by phoning (902) 867-2356, via email at tsg@stfx.ca or via the web at http://www.mystfx.ca/tsg/ or Toll Free at 1-888-860-2356.

Help with the internet
If you don't have an Ethernet card or network cable, can't access your email, or are experiencing other computer-related or telephone problems you should contact the Technology Support Group (TSG) at ext. 2356 or tsg@stfx.ca. The TSG website at http://www.mystfx.ca/tsg/ will also answer many internet and computer related questions.

Can I send and receive faxes?
If you require these services, you can go to the Info Desk located in the Bloomfield Centre (Ext. 2444) or the Library.

Telephone fraud and delinquent payment will result in discontinuation of telephone service.  There is a $100 charge for missing, lost or damaged telephones.

ID Cards

New students will be issued a StFX student ID card when they arrive on campus. This card will be used for the purpose of registration, writing exams, computer labs, meal hall, library, the recreation centre and special events. This ID card is expected to last throughout the 4 years you attend StFX. They are also swipe keys to MacIsaac, Governors and Bishops Hall residences. You should always have this card with you. Returning students will be expected to bring their ID card back to school with them. A new card will not be issued without a charge. ID replacement policy – a replacement ID will be issued from the residence office. There is a fee of $20 dollars to replace a lost.  If your ID card is worn, it will be replaced at no charge if you bring it to the office with you.  Once a new ID card is made, the student relinquishes his/her right to the old card.

Cleaning Services, Waste Disposal & Recycling

Cleaning
Residents are responsible for cleaning their own rooms, and are expected to keep their rooms and common areas in such a manner to comply with University standards of health and safety. In traditional and suite style residences, cleaning equipment (bucket, mop, and broom) is available for sign-out from your Resident Assistant. The cleaning staff will clean common area washrooms and lounges, corridors, stairwells, and laundry rooms. Vacuums will be available to residents in Governors Hall.

Residents of the apartments and Governors Hall are required to provide their own cleaning equipment. The cleaning staff will clean common area corridors, stairwells and laundry rooms.

At the end of the year, Cleaning Services and Residence Staff will inspect all rooms. Cleanliness and neatness will be part of this inspection and a $50 cleaning charge can be issued to each roommate if the room is not left in the condition in which it was found at check-in.

Waste Disposal & Recycling
StFX Students are Responsible Citizens Too! The university makes it a priority to recycle and expects students to adhere to our recycling policies.

Students in Traditional & Suite Style Residence Rooms
You will have two containers:
1) One for Recycling (small blue container) for recyclable materials, such as paper, pop cans, jars, bottles, plastic.
2) One for Garbage - (wastebasket) for all other waste products that are not recyclable.

The contents of both containers should be taken to the recycling stations and deposited in the proper sorting bins. The location of the recycling station will vary depending on the residence.

Students in the Apartment Style Residence Rooms
You are required to use clear bags for garbage and blue bags for recycling. Antigonish/Guysborough landfill will not accept green, black, or white garbage bags.  Garbage from the apartments must be deposited (ensure the bag is tied!) in the bins located in the parking lot outside.

Clear bag items (regular garbage): drop outside in the black garbage bin.
Blue bags for paper recyclable items: drop outside in the blue recycling bin.
Please use the green compost container for any compostable items.
Refundables can be recycled or taken to the Antigonish Recycling Depot

Fines will be levied for non-compliance with any of the above.

Damages and Repairs

Damages and/or required repairs should be reported to the appropriate maintenance department through the Residence Staff or you can contact FM at fm@stfx.ca. Your Residence Staff member will report it to Facilities Management. Residents will be held financially responsible for all damages and losses to their rooms or furnishings, including windows and doors. If the need for repairs is the result of damage, breakage, or vandalism, the residents occupying that room at the time will be held financially responsible, unless the individual responsible is found.

Students living in Residence are, as a collective, financially responsible for damages or losses in the common areas of the House or Residence in which they reside unless the perpetrator is identified. Thus, the University Management may assess the costs of repair or replacement against groups of students within a Residence or House. Damages, particularly to the common area and hallways, will be assessed in December and again in April. If you observe damage being done, please report it immediately to a Residence Staff Member.

PEOPLE WHO VANDALIZE UNIVERSITY PROPERTY ARE SPENDING YOUR MONEY. PLEASE REPORT ANY DAMAGES TO THE RESIDENCE STAFF!

Laundry Facilities

Laundry rooms are provided in each hall for your convenience. Washers cost $1.00 per load and dryers cost $1.00 per cycle. Change machines are not provided so start saving your change! Be careful not to overload these machines, as that may cause damage that prevents other students from using them. Please treat these facilities with respect.

Storage Rooms

Each traditional and suite style residence has a room for storage during the academic year. These rooms are available to students to store large items such as suitcases, hockey equipment, trunks etc. to save space in your residence room. If you choose to use one of these rooms, know that the University is not responsible for any lost or stolen items. Storage rooms are kept locked at all times. If you wish to gain access to one of these rooms ask your RA. All storage rooms in residence must be left vacant at the end of the academic year.  Any items left behind will be destroyed or donated to charity.

Each apartment in Power and Somers Halls has a storage unit on their floor for storage during the academic year. For residents of West St. Apartments please use apartment #4. These rooms are provided to students to store large items to save space in your room. If you choose to use one of these rooms, know that the University is not responsible for any lost or stolen items.

If you would like to store items over the summer months please inquire at Residence Services. If you are returning to the same apartment the following year it may be possible to store items in the storage room for the summer months
