Q: Can faculty/staff change their webFX Account password?
A: Yes. webFX Account passwords must be changed every 90 days. Each new password must be a minimum of 9 characters long and must not be the same as any previous three passwords. There are two ways to change a password:
STEP 1: Log into the particular WebMail account (http://webmail.stfx.ca), select Options, select Change Password. Change the password.
STEP 2: Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete on your keyboard, select Change Password. Change the password.
Q: What do you do if you forget your webFX password?
A: There are two ways to have a password reset if forgotten:
1) Come to the Contact Center (NH 43) with identification.
2) Call the Contact Center at extension 2356. The new passwords can then be given to the user over the phone if they are calling from their on-campus extension, or the Contact Centre will leave a message on the user's personal voicemail.
Q: Are there size limits to my webFX account?
A: Yes, there are quotas for your email, H: and W: Drives. Please see Academic Computing Committee Strategies & Policies under Policies to view the current quotas for faculty and staff members.
Q: How can I tell if I am approaching my quota?
A: To check the size of your Mailbox in Web Email:
Step 1: Visit: http://webmail.stfx.ca.
Step 2: Select the Mailbox Size link, located at the top of the page.
Step 3: Enter the webFX username and password. The Total Mailbox Size will be listed at the bottom. This page can also be used to give the user an idea of which folders in Mailbox need purging.
To check the size of the Mailbox in Microsoft Outlook:
Step 1: Open Microsoft Outlook.
Step 2: Select Tools/Mailbox Cleanup.
Step 3: Select Click here to see the size of your mailbox.
To check the size of the H/W: Drives (on a computer laboratory machine):
Step 1: Open My Computer.
Step 2: Select the network drive that needs to be checked.
Step 3: Once the H/W drive is open, go to Edit/Select All. This will highlight the entire contents of the network drive.
Step 4: Go to File/Properties. The current size of the network drive will be given next to “Size.”
Q: Are the login credentials for Banner Self-Service and mesAMIS accounts always the same?
A: No. Faculty members login to Banner Self-Service and mesAMIS using their faculty ID and the PIN provided by the Registrar’s office. Staff members login to mesAMIS using the username and password provided by the Contact Centre.
Q: Can students, staff, and faculty change their PIN?
A: Yes, PIN numbers can be changed for the Banner Self-service/mesAMIS accounts. To accomplish this, do the following:
Step 1: Log in to Banner Self-Service.
Step 2: Click on Personal Information.
Step 3: Click on Change PIN.
The new PIN must be 6-digits. When changing the PIN, it is being changed for both the Banner Self-Service and the mesAMIS account.
Q: How can I reset my PIN number after it is disabled?
A: The PIN will be disabled if there are three unsuccessful logion attempts in a row. If the PIN#/account becomes disabled, the TSG Contact Centre must be contacted requested to have it reset. Please dial extension 2356 or email tsg@stfx.ca.
Q: I forgot my PIN number. Where can I get this information?
A: Go to http://www.mystfx.ca/services/registrar/SelfService.htm# and click on the large blue "Banner Self-Service" link. From there, enter the faculty ID number and select the Forgot PIN? button. It will ask a security question, and if answered correctly, will let the PIN be changed.
If still experience problems, contact the Registrar’s office at extension 2160 or email registr@stfx.ca.
Q: What is Telecommunications?
A: Telecommunications may be defined as the process of exchanging information over a distance through of technological aids.
Q: What is the Telecommunications Department at StFX responsible for doing?
A: 1. Providing telephone services to faculty, staff and students of the StFX Community.
2. Administration of Meridian Voice Mail and individual voice mailboxes.
3. Administration and supervision of billing and billing services.
4. Responsible for sending Broadcast Messages to the (entire or individual segments of) Campus Community (only two phones on campus have this ability).
5. Monitoring the need for software and hardware upgrades and making requests to implement these changes to those with decision making power in attempt to maintain optimal service for the users.
Q: Where is the Telecommunications office located?
A: Requests and enquiries are dealt with via phone (#2356), e-mail tsg@stfx.ca or walk-in at the TSG Contact Centre in the basement of Nicholson Hall Tower, NH43. The actual office is located in Morrison Hall.
Q: What company provides the service?
A: Aliant is the current provider of service, hardware, and long distance calling services to StFX. We strive to maintain a strong working relationship with Aliant through continuous communications.
Q: How do I learn more about my phone and how to use it?
A: Please refer to the upper left menu. Phone service details are provided depending upon whether you are a student or Faculty/Staff member.
Q: What do I do with a broken phone?
A: Students: If the phone set gets damaged and no longer works either call or visit the TSG Contact Centre. They will replace the phone for you. If you go to the Contact please take damaged phone with you.
Faculty/Staff: If the digital phone is damaged, please do not unplug it. Simply call the TSG Contact Centre to arrange to pickup another set. Once you have the new set then quickly switch phones. This will avoid disabling the phone line.
Q: How do I make Long distance calls from my room?
A: Students in residence can only make long distance calls if they have a calling card. TSG provides students with CONNEXIONS Calling Cards. Once in possession of a card follow instructions on the card.
When trying to place a call OVERSEAS, please do so as follows:
Step 1: Dial 76 and the 10-digit authorization code on the front of the calling card. Once this is completed you will receive a dial tone.
Step 2: Dial 8011 and the rest of the number you want to call including the country code, routing code and so on.
Q: Can my Department arrange to make a Conference call?
A: Yes, once the call details are known ( date, time etc) please contact the TSG Contact Centre. Telecommunications office must arrange for a particular phone set to be in place and configured for the conference call. Last minute requests cannot be accommodated. Q: How do I access my voicemail?
A: Each person on campus receives a voicemail box. Note: this is a 4 digit number that may or may not be the same as your phone number/extension.

Q: If I move offices/residence rooms how do I move my phone?
A: f a user changes location they must notify the TSG Contact Centre. They will need to provide information regarding their present and previous locations. Please leave phones in residence rooms. Students will receive a new phone number and Voicemail box number. Faculty and staff are asked not to unplug their digital sets as well. Telecommunications will move the phone extension to its new location.
Q: How do I transfer a call with an Analog phone?
A: Analog phones have a "link' button. While connected to one user, press LINK, dial the extension to transfer to, and when connected, Press link to connect the two people. The user can either stay if so desired.
Q: Can I go to a specific message in my voicemail box?
A: Yes. You must know the message number you wish to access.
Step 1: Login to your voicemail.
Step 2: Select 86. The system will then prompt for the message number and the # sign.
Q: Can I view/use files on my USB Stick/Digital Camera?
A: Yes. If you connect the device to the USB port OpenSource will recognize it.
This mountable drive will appear under Computer with the other system drives.
Q: How can I book a webFX Computer Lab?
A: If you need to book a webFX Computer Lab for classroom use, please contact the Registrar’s Office at registr@stfx.ca or by calling (902)867-2160.
Q: Can I burn my files to a CD on a webFX Lab Computer?
A: Yes, the computers in webFX General Access labs are all equipped with CD Burners. To burn files to a blank CD:
Step 1: Insert a blank CD into the CD burner.
Step 2: You should receive a dialog box asking you what you would like to do. Select “Open Writable CD folder”.
Note: If you do not receive a dialog box, you can open the Writable CD folder by double-clicking on the “My Computer” icon and then double-clicking the CD-R/CD-RW drive.
Step 3: Drag the files/folders you wish to burn into the Writable CD folder.
Step 4: Click on the “Write these files to CD” link, located on the left hand side of the Writable CD folder.
Step 5: A CD Writing Wizard will appear. Enter the name you would like to call the CD into the “CD Name” field, and then click “Next”. Your files will then be written to the CD.
Note: When the CD finishes, the CD will be ejected. You can then open your CD Burner drive so you can remove the completed CD. With the Windows XP CD writer, you can only write and finalize the CD.
The software is very easy to use, but the final burn is final. Once you burn a CD using the XP integrated CD burning software, the CD is complete. If you are using a CD-R, you can no longer write to the disk after burning using Windows XP.
Using a CD-RW:
If you are using a CD-RW, you can still erase the disk and write to it again.
If you want to retain the files on the CD-RW you can easily copy them to the Desktop, erase the CD using the Erase option seen below.
When the CD is erased simply re-write these files to the CD, plus any new files you wish to add this time.
