Tuesday, November 20: The Value of Learning Management Systems (e.g. Moodle) as a Support for Traditional Classroom Teaching

These days, Learning Management Systems (LMS) such as Blackboard and Moodle are used by almost all post-secondary institutions as the web portal for both traditional and online courses. They’ve evolved a great deal since their inception, and now offer instructors a wide range of tools that allow for organization, learning, and communication. In light of StFX’s recent adoption of Moodle, faculty members unfamiliar with Moodle may be wondering “So why exactly should I be using this Moodle thing?” We hope to answer that question – and others!
During this session, Lise Brin (Angus L. Library) will present a whirlwind literature review on research into student perceptions and uses of LMS as sidekick for the traditional face-to-face classroom, while James Stewart (TSG) and Farnoush Zadeh (Continuing and Distance Education) will present hands-on examples of valuable uses of Moodle here at StFX.

Tuesday, October 23: Open Access: How does it impact teaching and research at StFX?

Open Access has been both hailed as the answer to unrestricted access to scholarly research and criticized as a threat to scholarly publishing. This session will provide a brief overview of Open Access and a discussion on the effect it has and will continue to have on teaching and research at StFX. There will be time to share your experience with open access; such as self-archiving your publications, using open access text books, publishing in open access journals, using creative commons licenses, doing research under an open access mandate or using the SPARC Canadian Author Addendum to secure your rights as an author. Tea, coffee and cake will be available.

At previous Brown Bag Lunch events, the topic "writing across the curriculum" was identified as one of the most pressing matters. In keeping with these priorities, Russell Wyeth and Cory Bishop are pleased to present Dr. Jan Pechenik from Tufts University, Boston MA, for a special BBL series event sponsored in part by the Faculty Development Committee.

Thursday, February 16th: Past Scholarly Teaching Grant recipients David Morgan (Chemistry), Jane Moseley (Nursing), and Michael Newton (Celtic Studies) will share their accomplishments made possible with the grant.
Tuesday, February 28th POSTPONED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE: Mathias Nilges will present on the new tutoring program the English Department has implemented. He will speak about the possibility for improving student writing with limited resources.
Monday, March 12th: Nancy Marenick of the Writing Center will present on how the Writing Center can support faculty at StFX.
Monday, March 26th: Wojciech Tokarz will present on the work he accomplished with a Faculty Development Travel Grant.
