Recognizing extraordinary achievements and remarkable contributions: DC announces 2019 award recipients

OTTAWA, ON —Dietitians of Canada will celebrate 54 individuals at an awards ceremony in Ottawa this Thursday, June 6, 2019. The awards celebrate individuals who have inspired, empowered and lent their passion to promote and elevate the dietetics profession.

“It is evident from the excellence and accomplishments of the 2019 award recipients that dietitians are everywhere and their influence runs deep.” said Karen Boyd, awards committee chair.  “We are proud to celebrate the ways that recipients are elevating the profession and inspiring their peers and communities."

Ryley-Jeffs Memorial Lecture
The Ryley-Jeffs Memorial Lecture will be delivered by Dr. Laurie Wadsworth.
Dr. Laurie Wadsworth’s career has focused on nutrition and health policy development in public health and academia. She investigates mass media messages to understand the roles of food in society and studies the historical roots of dietetics. She has worked collaboratively to effect change in public policy for improved nutrient profiles in the national food supply as a member of the Trans Fat Task Force and with Heart and Stroke Canada. Dr. Wadsworth also mentors dietetic students in policy development and research to build capacity for a strong future profession. She is a Fellow of Dietitians of Canada and served as Chair of the DC Board of Directors. Dr. Wadsworth has certainly made a dynamic impact on individual dietitians and the profession and is very deserving of the prestigious Ryley-Jeffs Memorial Lecture Award for 2019.  
Emeritus Member  
Fran Haley was presented with the DC Emeritus award. The Board of Directors bestows this permanent designation to retired members of DC in appreciation of unique and outstanding contributions to the advancement of the dietetic profession in Canada during the nominees' career.
.Heather-Ann Burell (St. Francis Xavier University ‘18) received the Regional Morgan Medal (Ontario) for research completed for her Honours thesis at StFX. At the 2019 conference she was awarded the National Morgan Medal for excellence in research.

Eight StFX students awarded prestigious Irving Research Mentorship Awards

This summer, the Irving Research Mentorship Awards program at StFX is allowing eight StFX students to conduct research that runs the gamut from gaining a better understanding of the molecular pathways that are targeted by bean consumption for chronic disease prevention to exploring carbon accumulation rates of different wetland types.
The prestigious award program, offered through StFX’s Frank McKenna Centre for Leadership, awards each recipient $6,000 in funding for 12 weeks of research. The students, who represent a variety of disciplines, each work under the guidance of a StFX faculty member.
“The visionary financial support provided by Arthur and Sandra Irving for these highly enriching student research awards is enabling a whole generation of StFX students to immerse themselves in important research studies while being mentored by our talented faculty members. Our students are developing valuable academic, life and leadership skills through these unique opportunities. This is what StFX is all about,” says McKenna Centre executive director Mary Coyle.
“I feel exceedingly fortunate to be a recipient of this award, as I am given the opportunity to explore a new and exciting area of food and nutrition research that I could potentially follow into my career,” says Heather-Ann Burrell of Pickering, ON.
The fourth year honours human nutrition student will be examining Nova Scotian bean protein concentrates as potential sources of bioactive peptides with antihypertensive qualities.
“The overall aim of the research is to gain a better understanding of the molecular pathways that are targeted by bean consumption for chronic disease prevention, in particular hypertension,” she says.
“In addition, working under the guidance of Professor Marcia English will allow me to grow as a student researcher as I will learn various laboratory techniques and will build my critical thinking skills.”
