Humanities Colloquium

Welcome to the Humanities Colloquium!

The HC is a unique way to study humanities disciplines. Instead of taking separate, competing courses, in the HC you will take three fundamental humanities disciplines (English, History or Art History, and Philosophy) as though they were parts of one big course. It is natural and enriching to understand the history of Western Civilization in relation to the artistic and intellectual developments of each age, and seeing the connections among great thinkers, great writers, and the political and social history of the time is what the HC is all about. In the HC you will learn how different humanities disciplines enhance and enrich one another.

Professors in the HC will work with you over your entire first year at X. They will be demanding and, as a team, they will get you to think clearly, to express yourself orally and in writing, and to learn from the great books of our culture.

Your undergraduate years are a time to form friendships. Because the HC is a group of students and faculty who work so closely together, you will form life-long friendships here: it happens every year!

If you have any questions, please send an email to  @email or call 902-867-2115.

Side-profile portrait of Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam wearing an X-Ring while writing on a piece of paper.

This portrait is of Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam (1466-1536), one of the greatest of the Renaissance humanist scholars. Erasmus believed that education in the humanities can produce the sort of scholar who is cultured, rigorous, and articulate – and who for those reasons can make a real difference in the world. If Erasmus were your contemporary, he would have enrolled in the Humanities Colloquium. Hence, our slight modification of the portrait is, we feel, entirely justified. The work is by Hans Holbein, The Younger (1497-1543), who also created famous portraits of Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn, St. Thomas More, and Thomas Cromwell.
