Notice: Library Information System (Novanet) Upgrade May 8th – May 17th

The Angus L Macdonald Library, in conjunction with Novanet, would like to advise you that we will be upgrading our Library Information System and catalogue in the coming weeks and to expect some disruption to library services during the transition.  When our new system is launched, you will not see much difference in the use and appearance of our online catalogue and search interfaces, but some things you can expect to be a little different include:

  • New Journal search interface.
  • Updated process for requesting local material (paging/Request & Retrieve) and requesting items from other Novanet partner libraries (Novanet Express).
  • Improved access to e-books, journal articles and electronic material to which StFX subscribes.
  • Sign-in to your library account and services with your StFX e-mail (Microsoft 365) login information.

We are excited for these changes as they will bring much needed enhancements that will allow staff to better serve you.  We request your patience during the first few weeks and months after our launch to allow staff to adjust to new processes and to work out the inevitable glitches that come with system upgrades.  Thank you for your understanding.

Key Dates:

  • April 15th – May 16th
    • New items will no longer be added to the old system, including items for course reserves.

      • To access your library account and self-renew items you have on loan.
  • May 10th
    • Last day:
      • Items can be loaned or renewed by library staff on your library account.
      • New patrons can be added to our old system.
      • Fines or fees can be paid in our old system.

  • May 17th
    • New system goes live and library services resume.
    • Novanet Classic catalogue is decommissioned.
    • Existing links to items in the old Novanet catalogue will change and may break; direct links to e-resources on publisher or vendor sites will not be affected.

  • All items at the Angus L. Macdonald Library can still circulate normally between May 11th and May 16th, however they will be processed in our new system beginning May 17th and may take a few days to appear on, or be removed from, your new account.
  • Our Interlibrary Loans (ILL) services (aka Document Delivery) will still allow you to request and receive materials from other libraries between May 8th and 17th.

Course Reserves:

  • Our Course Reserves collection will have to be rebuilt after the new system is in place on May 17th, so we will need some time to allow for this processing.
  • Existing items on Course Reserves will not be discoverable in our online catalogue after the system is launched, but we will work quickly to get this collection back online as soon as possible.
  • Faculty may still request items to be placed on course reserves at any time.
  • New and existing course reserves items can be borrowed normally.
