St. Francis Xavier University was the first University in North America to install a full Tandberg Prisma, Teleste Open System. The installation was completed in 1997 and the software was updated in November of the same year.
Updated to the Tanberg ICM Lab in July 2003, the system was a 10 position PC lab with a master communication station.
Each multimedia student station was complete with a DIVACE DUO Virtual Tape Recorder (which could be used separately, or as an integrated part of the Tanberg ICM Lab), up to date second language educational software, Internet, and email access.
The system also had a remote control screen transfer system, which allowed the instructor to monitor and access all student monitors, keyboards and mouses. It also allowed the instructor to show composite video from a VCR directly to all of the students in the classroom.
The present 13 station lab was installed in August, 2017 after a previous upgrade in 2010 and features up to date Apple iMac technology, complete audio/video recording possibilities and integrated chat, audio and video communication within the lab. Instructor has full control of all stations in order to monitor and assist students, while helping master their learning experience within the lab.
The MLC also offers a collection of Links presenting a guide to Internet based language and cultural resources for both students and educators of French, Gaelic, German and Spanish interested in language learning and cultural awareness via Internet and multimedia technology.
The Language Lab offers an environment and a schedule that allows students taking language courses at StFX the opportunity to participate in pre-scheduled facilitated/instructed weekly lab sessions, as well as free time for second language students who wish to participate in individual reviews, study sessions, complete assignments or conduct research.
