Have you ever thought of studying German?

How is it that the culture of German-speaking Europe has so profoundly influenced and shaped Western civilization through the centuries and into today? Can a liberal arts education be considered complete without an understanding of these influences?
The German Courses at StFX provide the opportunity for students to explore such questions and others in its language and culture courses. Here, students will encounter a culture of "poets and thinkers" as well as scientists, engineers, artists and great entrepreneurs.
 
A few German inventions: the Diesel engine, the Bunsen burner, the Electron microscope, the Contact lens, the Printing press, the Tape recorder, the MP3 music format, the Radar system, the Helicopter, the Coffee filter, the Airbag, the Speedometer, the Aspirin, the Automobile, the Bicycle, the Programmable computer, Adhesive tape and Beer!
 
A few German composers: Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven, Johannes Brahms, Jakob Ludwig Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, George Frideric Handel, Richard Strauss, Richard Wagner, Robert Schumann, Georg Philipp Telemann, Hans Zimmer.
 
A few German companies: Volkswagen, Daimler AG, Allianz, BMW, Siemens, Bosch, BASF, Continental AG, Bayer, Lufthansa, SAP SE, Adidas, Porsche SE, Mercedes-Benz, Hapag-Lloyd, BioNTech, Henkel, Puma.
 
They have the opportunity to experience German language and culture firsthand through study trip to Berlin and Stuttgart and Hamburg. Germany can boast impressive economic development and one of the best education systems in the world.

GERMAN at StFX

The German courses are designed to provide students with a basic knowledge of German language and culture skills.

Our courses provide them with basic communication skills to allow them to understand, speak and read on a basic level in contemporary situations.

At StFX we expose our student to the wide range of German culture and language

  • Through our Annual German Day at StFX with speakers from a wide range of expertise (Nova Scotia Symphony, SAP, BMW, Faber Castell, Georgetown University, Stuttgart University, Marine  Biology, Mercedes- Benz, Porsche….)
  • our annual study trip to Berlin or Stuttgart
  • our active German Society that organizes extracurricular activities like film  nights, Octoberfest, lectures
  • “Kaffee und Kuchen”  our weekly conversation classes
