Financial Resources

Over the last number of weeks, the Government of Canada has made many announcements regarding financial resources. The following resources below may be of assistance.

Federal Government COVID 19 Student Resources 

Canada Emergency Student Benefit (CESB)- This benefit would provide $1,250 per month for eligible students or $1,750 per month for eligible students with dependents or disabilities. This benefit would be available from May to August 2020. 

Canada Student Service Grant (CSSG)- Will help students gain valuable work experience and skills while they help their communities during the COVID‑19 pandemic. For students who choose to do national service and serve their communities, the new CSSG will provide up to $5,000 for their education in the fall. More details will be made available on the “I Want to Help” platform soon.

Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) -If you have stopped working because of COVID-19, the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) may provide you with temporary income support. The CERB provides $500 a week for up to 16 weeks. Additional information about eligibility requirements and how to apply are listed on the website.

Student Work Placement Program- To help give real-world, hands-on work experience to post-secondary students across Canada.

Youth Employment and Skills Strategy Program- The Youth Employment and Skills Strategy (YESS) builds on programming delivered under the previous Youth Employment Strategy. This modernized strategy, which is delivered by 11 departments and agencies across the Government of Canada, aims to provide more flexible employment services and enhanced supports to support all young Canadians. In this way the strategy aims to help youth develop the skills and gain the experience they need to successfully transition into the labour market.

Mitacs: Mitacs is the platform to allow you to reach your goals, whether they’re commercializing your projects or developing innovative products. We provide funding for projects — up to 55% — and connect highly trained researchers with the businesses that need them and help guide you through the process. We do all this — and more.

Canada Summer Job Grant- The Canada Summer Jobs program provides opportunities for youth to develop and improve their skills within the not-for-profit, small business, and public sectors, and supports the delivery of key community services.

Government of Canada: Support for Students and Recent Graduates

Moratorium on the repayment of Canada Student Loans - Effective March 30, Government of Canada is placing a six-month interest-free moratorium on the repayment of Canada Student Loans for all student loan borrowers. No payment will be required and interest will not accrue during this time. Students do not need to apply for the repayment pause.

Canada Student Grants and Loans - The Government of Canada offers student grants and loans to full-time and part-time students. Grants and loans help students pay for their post-secondary education.

StFX Financial Aid Office

StFX Emergency Fund- The StFX Student Emergency Relief Fund provides financial assistance for StFX students to address the most urgent cases of need. Visit the website for the application and information.

Scholarships Canada- is part of the SchoolFinder Group. The site has been helping students find scholarships since 1997.
