Women's and Gender Studies

The academic field of Women’s and Gender Studies provides an interdisciplinary, multicultural and feminist analysis of women's lives and history. It re-examines traditional ideas about women and their place in society and introduces theoretical frameworks for understanding questions about the nature, roles, problems and accomplishments of women.

Women's and Gender Studies grew out of the women's movement of the 1960s and 1970s. As such, Women's and Gender Studies has a strong tradition of both social action and academic research. One important goal of Women's and Gender Studies—a goal which has profoundly affected our methodology—is to allow women to be subjects doing research and creating knowledge about ourselves rather than the objects of other people's studies. Women's and Gender Studies is about women, and it is for people who want to create a society and culture in which people of all genders, races, sexual orientations, and abilities can find acceptance and respect.
